Brighton and Hove has come a step closer to getting a new specialist breast care unit.
City councillors last night unanimously backed outline planning permission for a new unit to be built on the Royal Sussex County Hospital complex at Rosaz House in Bristol Gate, Brighton.
The move is a major boost to campaigners who want to keep breast care services in the city.
The existing Nigel Porter unit at the Royal Sussex has become too small and it was feared the service could be moved to the Princess Royal Hospital at Haywards Heath.
Jubilant supporters of the new unit said they would keep up the pressure for the money to pay for the scheme to be found.
The planning sub-committee heard there was a proven need to keep the unit in Brighton and Hove.
