Hellingly Lions roared back from the brink of defeat to score a spectacular victory over Poole Comets.

The Sussex outfit won the match 90-83 at their Lower Dicker track, despite the visitors unveiling world champion Dave Hemsley as their new signing before the match.

Hellingly skipper Martyn Hollebon scored a brilliant win over Hemsley on his way to 22 points.

He was not the only match-winner, however, for a Lions team who were without Zac Parsons, who is moving to America, and again tracked veteran Alan Boniface and were also forced to include club minibus driver John Myles.

Boniface, who made made his comeback the previous week at the age of 45, took maximum points from two races, Hollebon doing a superb job in getting his team-mate out in front for two 7-3's.

Eddie Ridley also finished strongly, while Barrie Geer enjoyed his best league performance on a new bike.

Lions were five points down after three heats and were still behind until Hollebon and Boniface put them in front with four races to go.

A last-heat decider was looming when Jamie Cheshire and Neil Hollebon finished on the wrong end of an unexpected 7-3.

The scores were level with two heats left, but when Hemsley and his team-mate were both excluded for jumping the start Lions were gifted a crushing 7-0.

Scorers for Lions: Martyn Hollebon 22, Ridley 17, Neil Hollebon 16, Cheshire 13, Geer 11, Boniface 8, Joe Plumstead 2, Myles 1.
