It is remarkably tight at the top of Division Two in the Sussex League as just 24 points separate the top four clubs battling for the two promotion places up for grabs.

The top two clubs going into Saturdays games, East Grinstead and Stirlands, were both beaten and this allowed Cuckfield and Bexhill to close the gap on the leaders.

East Grinstead were beaten by just 24 runs at Roffey after Paul Harrison had hit a magnificent 130 in a total of 241-7 declared by the home side, the in form Mick Webb adding 49.

Grinstead were then dismissed for 217 despite Zimbawean Donald Campbell cracking 94 from just 85 balls.

Umesh De Alvis returned bowling figures of 7-71.

Stirlands have only been beaten twice this season and both reverses have been at the hands of Bexhill.

Once again it was a personal triumph for Bexhill's Aussie skipper Sam Roberts who played a part with both bat and ball to earn his side their win by five wickets.

Stirlands made 189 all out as Ryan Bonner hit a typically flamboyant 65 and Jamie Hall added a more patient 43.

Roberts took 6-74 to set up the platform for victory.

The Aussie then cracked 75 not out and with Martin Barry making 68 Bexhill reached 192-5 to clinch their fifth League win of the campaign.

Ryan Bonner was the pick of the Stirlands bowlers, he took 3-44.

Cuckfield have moved into second place following a four-wicket win at Lewes Priory.

Lewes made just 136 as Pakistani Kashif Ibrahim made 50 and James Cruickshank 24 but the highlight of the innings was the medium pace bowling of Rod Candfield for Cuckfield.

He took 7-46 to produce his club's best bowling figures of the season.

Jason Oates with 42 led the bid for victory and with James Buckeridge making 29 not out Cuckfield reached 140-6 despite the efforts of Ibrahim who fought a one man battle with 4-45.

In the 2nd XI Championship, Eastbourne lead Horsham by 20 points at the top of the table.
