The death of a young Sussex soldier is being re-examined.

Private Sean Benton, 20, from Hastings, had gunshot wounds to his chest when he was found at the Royal Logistic Corps headquarters at Deepcut, Surrey, in June 1995.

Police have confirmed detectives will also be reviewing the death of Private Cheryl James, from Wales, who was found with a bullet through her forehead at the same barracks in November 1995.

Detectives announced in May they were reinvestigating the shootings of two other soldiers at Deepcut.

The Surrey Police move comes as the influential Commons Defence Select Committee is about to launch its own investigation into the series of deaths at the barracks.

The families of Pte Benton and Pte James have joined forces with the relatives of Pte Geoff Gray, from London, who died of gunshot wounds to the head last September, and those of Pte James Collinson, from Perth, Scotland, who died of a gun shot wound while on guard duty in March.

The Army claimed all four soldiers committed suicide but the families are demanding to know how their children died.

A police spokeswoman confirmed on Saturday detectives were now reviewing the papers of the two earlier deaths.
