The Barnet Choral Society rarely visits Brighton but on the evidence of its latest, it should return and soon.
Verdi's wonderfully dramatic Requiem has never sounded better in the cavern of St Batholomew's Church.
It may not have been quite as full-throated as other productions here but the full flavour of Verdi's setting of the Latin mass was present throughout.
Superb soloists helped. Mezzo Alison Kettlewell was deliciously brassy and clear and Jennifer Smith's soprano voice was delicious.
Tenor Philip Slater did sterling work and replacement bass-baritone Jonathan Brown was a revelation. Another revelation was the Amici Chamber Orchestra under conductor Colin Durrant.
Local choruses watch out. Barnet is treading on your coat tails. Their reading of the Dies Irae (Day of Wrath) knocked my socks off.
