Peter Kyle (Letters, July 5) badly needs a few history lessons.
The issue of a single currency predates Hitler by thousands of years.
In no way is it a new idea. As recently as the 19th Century, Bismarck unified Germany under one currency after the Prussian army thrashed the French. In fact, the concept of a single currency is old hat.
Politicians get excited but the rest of us have moved on.
The euro has been overtaken by credit cards, computers and the internet. Peter is wrong to state that the European Union kept the peace.
What did that for 55 years was the nuclear cold war stalemate between the US and the Soviet Union. Since the pulling down of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union, nasty ethnic cleansing and wars have broken out all over the continent.
The European Union has been powerless to do one iota about it.
