The headmaster of Worth School has been appointed as an abbot.

Father Christopher Jamison is to take over from Father Stephen Ortiger as Abbot of Worth Abbey.

Father Christopher, who will step down as headmaster of Worth School at the end of this month, said: "I am deeply touched by the confidence the community has shown in me.

"The monastic life is a great gift to the church and the world. It will be my privilege to foster this gift at Worth Abbey."

Father Christopher was born in Australia in 1951.

He holds an MA from Oxford in French and Spanish and a BA from London in philosophy and theology.

He is co-author of To Live Is To Change, which examines the changes in the Catholic Church during the last 30 years.

He was ordained in 1978 and became headmaster at Worth School in 1994.

As abbot he will become president of the school's board of governors.

The current deputy head, Peter Armstrong will become acting headmaster for one year from August 1.

Father Mark Barrett will become deputy head-master for the same period.
