One of the largest multi-purpose venues in the South-East has revamped its web site to play a starring role online.

The Brighton Centre, which has played to host to some of the world's most famous acts, including Kylie Minogue, Bryan Adams, James Brown and the Pet Shop Boys, has relaunched its site.

The new site was designed and hosted by Brighton-based web developers Dataline Software.

It contains up-to-date listings of concerts, sports events and exhibitions for the Brighton Centre and the Hove Centre, and enables visitors to purchase tickets online.

The relaunch coincides with the centre's nomination for the AIPC Apex Award for The World's Best Conference Centre.

Administration manager Penny Parker said the new site reflecte changing trends in web site design.

She said: "We've tried to make the site much more accessible. Our previous site was focused more on how things looked rather than the information it contained. That was when the web was more about style than anything else.

"We get a large number of people visiting the web site and the new design makes it easy for them to find the information they need. Ultimately, we want to expand the site to contain more about parking facilities and places to eat and drink."

Adrian Bleach, managing director of Dataline, said: "Web sites have most value when they are simple for the editorial team to manage while still delivering sophisticated information to the public, quickly and elegantly."

The new site can be modified by centre staff without a web designer.

Information can be added up to a year in advance for postdated publication.

Dataline worked on the site in its original form but has now designed everything from scratch.

Mr Bleach said: "The team worked very hard on our new web site. It gave them an opportunity to expand on the work they had already done with us."

Dataline, which has 15 staff and was founded almost 20 years ago, does web development work for the BBC and Pfizer and a number of Sussex companies.

Chief technical officer Mike Robinson said: "We do work for companies all round the world but we live in and around Brighton and it's nice to get more involved with something we see every day."
