Four council workers are exchanging roads for water to take part in a three-day adventure in aid of a new children's hospice.

Mel Huckle, from East Preston, and Dan Witcher, Nigel Dewey and Adam Williams, from Worthing, spend their working days making sure roads in the Worthing area are in good condition.

But on July 19, the quartet will become the Wild West Sussex Trackers to raise money for the Chestnut Tree House appeal to build a £5 million children's hospice in Angmering.

The adventure starts at Adur Outdoor Activities Centre with the men canoeing to the sea before picking up a yacht to sail to Littlehampton. They will paddle up the River Arun to Pulborough and cycle to Henfield.

They then plan to canoe back to Shoreham.

Mel and Nigel are highways inspectors at West Sussex County Council's southern area depot at Clapham, near Worthing, where Dan is a traffic engineer and Adam installs road signs.
