There have been improvements in St James's Street in the past two years which have encouraged businesses to move there.
The street, which had become run down, is starting to thrive again and become an attraction in Brighton.
But there are still problems from drunks, beggars and louts who are never far away from the shops and restaurants.
Now the St James's Street Action Group has launched a scheme, which means anyone who gets into trouble will be able to dive into a shop for safety.
There will be a network of safe shops in the street where people will be able to stay until the police arrive.
It is a good idea involving co-operation from traders who have made much of the running in improving the shopping area.
Together with controls on drinkers in the street and CCTV cameras, it should help make the street a much safer place than it was in the past.
