Peter Moore is going to celebrate the arrival of his new bed, courtesy of The Argus Appeal, by having a very long lie-in.

Mr Moore, a spina bifida sufferer, of Portland Road, Hove, has not had a good night's sleep in almost a year because his bed sags in the middle and has springs sticking out.

Because of a hip operation he had at 16, he needs his torso supported but his bed is on the verge of collapse.

He suffers nightly spasms in his legs and knows the new bed the appeal bought from Vokins@Home in Blatchington Road, Hove, for £279 will provide the comfort he needs.

Mr Moore, 27, couldn't believe his luck when he got a call saying he was going to be given a new double bed.

He said: "I'm a paraplegic and I need support to prevent sores because I get straight out of my wheelchair and into bed.

"When it is cold, my legs get stiff and painful. They go into spasms but a new bed would really help. At the moment I have to treat the spasms with painkillers.

"The old bed gets lower and lower every time I get into it. I was ecstatic when I found out The Argus Appeal was going to give me the gift.

"It means I can finally get a decent sleep at night which is great. It is really nice of the appeal to help me and I really appreciate this."

Mr Moore's mother Lorraine contacted staff of the appeal after reading about the good work it has done.

Mr Moore, who lives on State benefits, couldn't afford the cost of a good quality bed.

Last year, The Argus Appeal fund reached a record-breaking £80,000 for needy people in Sussex.

Appeal co-ordinator Elsa Gillio said: "Peter is a lovely chap and makes the most of everything. It epitomises everything the appeal is about."
