Tap water in Sussex is top quality according to a report from Worthing-based Southern Water.

The report shows the 579 million litres of water supplied to its 2.2 million customers was of exceptional quality.

The firm has carried out £40 million of improvement schemes to upgrade the quality of its tap water during the past year.

Scientists conducted more than 386,000 tests on water samples and 99.9 per cent met the most stringent quality tests, rivalling the best in Europe.

Water was tested for more than 100 substances at various points on its journey from reservoirs to taps.

Over the next three years, Southern Water plans to spend £130 million on improvements and has completed the upgrading of more than 500 miles of pipework as well as refurbishment and upgrading of installations.
