University students usually finish their studies with a degree and debts running into five figures.

Student loans of £10,000 are topped up by hefty credit card bills for many people at Brighton and Sussex Universities.

The Government has said it intends to tackle problems caused by student debt which are causing widespread resentment at colleges and universities.

But it has not yet said what exactly it intends to do and the suspicion remains the answer will be not much.

Introducing tuition fees has not made a great difference but the replacement of grants with loans has.

Ministers need to ease the burden for students who are finding the mounting debts worrying and unfair.
