Students organised their own World Cup to raise £1,000 for a football fan almost killed in a go-kart accident.

Dana Carter, 15, was guest of honour at the football tournament organised by friends at the Priory School in Lewes.

Dana suffered horrific head injuries when the 50cc go-kart he was driving ploughed through a fence and under a lorry on June 1.

He was in a coma for more than two weeks and is still being treated at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Brighton.

Friends at the school in Mountfield Road organised the tournament to raise money for Dana and his family.

Eight teams took part, with Dana coming along to watch the semi-finals and final.

The winners played a team of teachers, with the students triumphing 2-0.

Afternoon lessons were cancelled as the whole school turned out to watch.

The 56 players were each charged £1, with more money raised from donations.

Pupils also paid to take part in a non-uniform day on Wednesday.

Dana is an avid Manchester United fan and his friends recorded England's World Cup matches for him while he was in a coma.

Head of Year 10 Sab Sahota-Lyons said: "As soon as I suggested organising something for Dana, the students came up with the football tournament.

"It was good to see him. It was quite a long afternoon for him but everyone realised how important it was to help him and his family."

Ed Dunn, 15, said: "Dana is a friend to everyone and he was always bringing a football to play with. It was a relief when he came and we saw he was looking better."

Dana is making steady progress in his recovery but will not be returning to the school.

In September he will start at Chailey Heritage School for children with disabilities in North Chailey, near Lewes.

He was recently transferred to the Royal Alexandra after initially being treated at Birmingham Children's Hospital.

The accident happened in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, and was witnessed by Dana's father, Mark, and 13-year-old brother Anton.
