Quick action by a retiring policeman resulted in four suspects being arrested within hours of a burglary.
A guitar with "Slammer" written on it was stolen during a house raid in New Barn Close, Portslade, on Wednesday afternoon.
Community beat officer PC Barry Jeffcoat had an idea that the thieves would want to sell it on quickly because of its distinctive appearance.
PC Jeffcoat, who retires next week after almost 30 years with Sussex Police, visited local shops which buy and sell second-hand goods.
He gave them a description of the instrument and within hours was told that it had been offered for sale.
Inspector Mark Powles said: "As a result of PC Jeffcoat's prompt action we were able to make two arrests at the shop.
"A further two men were arrested later yesterday and our inquiries are continuing."
