Businesses in the South-East do not realise their domain name registration needs to be renewed and are putting their internet presence at risk.

While 34 per cent of companies surveyed were unaware of this, the level of knowledge was stronger than the national average, which showed 53 per cent were ignorant of the need to renew.

Domain names form the basis of all web site and email addresses and those ending in .uk have to be renewed every two years.

Without them, the company effectively disappears from the internet and cannot be contacted electronically.

Lesley Cowley, managing director of Nominet, who carried out the survey, said:

"There have been several high-profile examples of companies not renewing their domain names and losing internet access, albeit temporarily, as a result.

"We are advising people to check when their domain name registration is due for renewal and make themselves a diary note."
