A man's body has been recovered from the foot of the cliffs at Beachy Head.
Sussex Police scrambled its force helicopter after reports of a body on the beach at Gun Gardens, close to the notorious suicide spot.
Dover Coastguard were called and they passed the alert to the Eastbourne inshore and offshore lifeboats at 4.15pm yesterday.
Rescue teams from Eastbourne and Bexhill were also summoned to recover the body from the foot of the cliffs.
The body was taken to Eastbourne mortuary. The lifeboats stood down at around 7.40pm.
An inquest will be held.
