Sports centre manager Ashley Jones broke down and cried when he tried to go back to the scene of a fatal crash, a court heard.

He told his girlfriend to stop the car as she drove him towards the stretch of road where David Winder died in a head on crash with Jones' car.

The defendant told police he cried on his partner's shoulder when he was interviewed on the morning he was released from hospital.

The catering manager at the David Lloyd Sports centre, Brighton Marina, told officers he could only remember swerving to try to avoid a "blurry object" as his Ford Fiesta collided with Mr Winders car on the A259 at Friston in September.

Jones, 33, of St Anne's Road, Eastbourne, broke down again in the dock as his statement was read to the court yesterday.

There were also tears from his relatives and those of Mr Winder, who were sitting beside in the public gallery.

The scenes came as Stephen Shay, prosecuting, described how Jones had wept during the interview.

In the statement he said: "I cried on my girlfriend's shoulder because I knew I had been involved in a crash where someone had died."

The court heard that Jones had pulled out to overtake another car as he was on his way to work at 7am.

Mr Winder, 55, from Peacehaven died from his injuries in the crash. Jones denies causing his death by dangerous driving.

The trial continues.
