Traditionally, mayoral visits start with the civic leader arriving in a luxury limousine. But not in Worthing.

Mayor Eric Mardell has dispensed with such top-of-the-range finery. This year, he'll be getting around in a Skoda.

The decision has raised a few sniggers among council staff, but Councillor Mardell is convinced he has made the right choice.

And he thinks people will agree when they see the mayoral motor.

Coun Mardell said: "When we went to look at the cars we narrowed it down to two, a Volkswagen and the Skoda.

"One or two of my colleagues have laughed but it is a really nice car, very elegant and comfortable. I think it upholds the mayor's status."

The mayoral car has been a controversial subject in Worthing.

The borough council was criticised for continuing to use a Daewoo when the car giant announced huge job cuts in the town.

The car was repossessed and the council forced to hire another when the cash-strapped company withdrew its sponsorship in February.

The new car, a Skoda Superb Classic 2.0, will be leased to the council for three years by Clarion Cars of Tarring.

Council leader Sheila Player said: "The controlling group were anxious the mayor should be provided with a suitable vehicle for his civic duties but at the same time at minimum cost to council taxpayers."

Miles Bridle, sales executive from Clarion Cars, said the car was receiving excellent reviews.

He said: "We are very pleased the council has decide on the Skoda Superb."

The car will be delivered at the end of July.
