On Friday, Brighton Jazz Club reconvenes for a special occasion, albeit a sad one.

Musician Pete Jacobsen was a hugely respected pianist and composer whose recent, untimely death was a massive blow.

His talent had been heard in varied settings such as the Morrissey-Mullen funk band in the Eighties, where his synth playing was revelatory; he had also been a major part of folk band Carmina.

Several fine players have gathered to remember Pete, with profits going to charity.

He was the pianist in tenor saxophonist Tim Whitehead's quartet and, earlier, with Bobby Wellins.

They'll be joined by more of his close associates, including altoist Geoff Simkins, guitarist Dave Cliff, bassist Simon Woolf and another colleague of Pete's from the Wellins quartet, Spike Wells on drums.

Also on Friday, Pete's fellow Carmina stalwart Nigel Thomas is in action at Komedia, with Brighton's soul veterans the Blues Corporation, featuring Geoff Hearn on tenor sax and Dave Hampton, trumpet.

There's more blues on Sunday with soloist John Crampton in action on guitar, harmonica and foot at the Evening Star, Surrey Street.

The Greys has rising star guitarist Paul Tiernan, who has toured with Donovan, among others.
