It was with reluctance and disappointment that I had to confirm last night that we would not be taking up our chance to play in the EuroCup.

The reasons have been well documented in The Argus today. Before we get too down about it, let me make two things clear.

First, this is the direction we want to move in eventually and I think we have clearly proved that this time. Second, we have made sure qualification in the future will be decided on a team's results in the BBL rather than just the fact that they have been in Europe before. With that, part of our mission has been accomplished. Now we will have to play our way into Europe next season.

It has been a big week for basketball with the news of the BBL switch to a single divison of 11 teams. I like a lot of things that have been decided. There was not much choice about going to one division when Derby pulled out for next season. I am disappointed for Derby but if they cannot be a healthy franchise next season we need to evaluate the whole deal. It comes down to facilities and the whole structure of the club.

I understand Derby plan to return in an improved venue which is great. Edinburgh have made a good move and Milton Keynes and Thames Valley have plans to move towards new arenas.

As for a TV deal or a sponsor for the league, the news is positive on both fronts but I cannot say a whole lot about it right now. Things look good and there will be some news shortly.

As for players, Wilbur Johnson and I have been playing phone tag this week and that's all good. I have also had an in depth discussion with Sterling Davis about returning and I have narrowed it down to one other American who has not played with us before. Although I have had contact with Albert White and his agent, I believe they are looking around and the man I have in mind would be a replacement for him.

While I was in the States, Oklahoma won their Championship with Albert and Sterling starting the game and Randy Duck coming off the bench to add a big spark as the Storm cruised to the title in front of big home crowd.

Other players from the BBL were also in the tourney. John Thomas from Chester continued to play well and Jeremy Hyatt from Newcastle did his thing by knocking down a few threes. There was a lot of talent on display and it gave me a chance to get a few new names on my recruiting list.

The rest of the league has made a few moves and we are a little behind right now but never fear. I feel good about how things are shaping up. Chester Jets look like the team to beat for now. McCord, Cameron and Davis are all set to return and they have signed Todd Cauthorn and Shawn Myers to those with room to add. They will be awfully tough but I must add they are hard to compete with right now.

They are paying their players very well in the BBL right now. We need to continue to work hard off the court to get in position to get some of these players.

On a side note, my brothers and I played in our annual 4th of July golf tournament and finished second at 16 under par in a four person best shot. That was one shot off the lead and we won the only skin of the day, good for $400. Believe me when I say I was the weak link on the team. My brothers can really hit the ball.

I also understand I came second in the Fantasy Football run by The Argus. Good stuff, but that's enough of coming second. I want us to be No. 1 in this country and all our focus is now on that.
