The rich and famous often spend years on golf club waiting lists before shelling out thousands to play on the most desirable greens and fairways.

But even the most patient, powerful and prosperous can only dream of setting foot on one course.

Because between East Grinstead and Lewes, close to Ashdown Forest, is the most exclusive golf course in Britain. It has a membership of one.

The course is owned by millionaire Chinese businessman Larry Yung.

Nestling in the beautifully-manicured grounds of Birch Grove in Chelwood Gate, the immaculate 18-hole course is well-hidden from prying eyes.

Designed by world-renowned course architect Donald Steel, it is reputed to be a masterpiece.

Mr Yung, ranked the fourth richest businessman in China by Forbes magazine, bought the 14-bedroom country house from former prime minister Harold Macmillan's family in 1993 for £5 million.

Now, concealed within its leafy borders, is what one professional described as "one of the finest courses in the South-East".

Only a privileged few have been lucky enough to see it. An army of greenkeepers and groundsmen tend it all year round but remain loyal to Mr Yung, 59, whose father is vice-president of China, and will not reveal any details.

One said: "I am afraid I can't comment. You will have to talk to the office."

Another said: "Sorry, I can't say anything. Everything has to go through Mr Yung and he doesn't like talking about it."

Even in The Red Lion, Chelwood Gate's pub, the enigma remains.

A barmaid said: "You could try talking to the greenkeepers but they have all been sworn to secrecy."

Mr Yung is the Hong Kong-based chairman of the CITIC Pacific conglomerate.

His interests include aviation, property, banking and telecommunications and he only visits his British home a few times a year.

When he is not there he allows a hand-picked selection of charities access to the hallowed turf.

Les Chandler, a member of Haywards Heath Golf Club, played there last year as part of an event for Age Concern.

He said: "The course is superb. It has 18 holes and is absolutely immaculate."

With an estimated fortune of about £490 million Mr Yung is one of the richest property owners in Sussex.

Born into a rich Shanghai family and brought up in China, he moved to Hong Kong at the age of 36 and launched an electronics business. Four years later he joined CITIC Pacific.

But despite what is known about the man, it is unlikely the residents of Chelwood Gate will find out more about his course.

When it was granted planning permi- ssion, Mr Yung was told it had to remain "purely private" for use by the owner and any guests or family members he may invite.

So villagers and big-hitters will just have to content themselves with a peek through the trees.
