Visitors to Brighton's gay Pride spectacular are being invited to spell out their feelings for a loved one on a toilet door - and help fund the event.

More than 60,000 people are expected to attend the festival and the cash is needed to pay for toilet facilities.

Now people are being invited to put their sweetheart's name and a message of love on a plaque, which will be fixed on the door of a portable loo.

If you don't have romantic intentions, toilets can also be dedicated to a foe.

People are already queuing up for the unusual feature, which costs £50 per cubicle or £500 for the two banks of urinals.

The idea is the brainchild of leaders of Pride in Brighton and Hove 2002, who are trying to get all 80 toilet cubicles and the urinals sponsored for the event on Saturday, August 10.

Those paying for the message will get a certificate as well as the plaque on the door. The urinals will have a banner hung over them.

Jamie Jones, Pride project manager, said: "Some people put their business names on, others put names or personal messages."

The £9,000 cost of hiring the loos for the event in Preston Park, Brighton, is one of the bigger expenses.

The event, which is free and attracted a record 60,000 people last year, costs £135,000 to run, with Health and Safety the biggest expense at £20,000 and power for the generators costing £7,000.

Mr Jones said: "Some hotels have sponsored cubicles. People can do them for lovers - former, current or even future."

Donald Hales, 54, of Brighton, who runs the salon Donald of Lewes in Fisher Street, Brighton, is sponsoring a loo.

He sponsored one last year and said: "It's good. People have mentioned they have peed on me."

Mr Hales has his shop name placed on the plaque and said last year he could not find the toilet with his name on and believes a Pride-goer may have sneaked the plaque home as a souvenir.

The event, which is one of the most popular events in the gay calendar, has attracted big-name business sponsorship, including Vodafone.

Organisers are desperate to ensure entry remains free, unlike London Mardi Gras, which this year cost £17 a ticket.

The event kicks off with a gold and glitz-themed parade, which starts from Marine Parade at 11am and heads to Preston Park for the festival.
