Chill John returned to winning ways with a points defeat of Sheffield's Daniel Thorpe at Southampton Guildhall on Friday.

Referee Dave Parris scored the four-rounder 39-38, or two rounds to one with one even, but despite the narrow scoreline there was no doubt John had won.

The Brighton lightweight, whose only defeat came in his last outing against Jon Thaxton, may have been a little hesitant at the start but was well on top in the final two sessions, hurting his man and forcing him to hold on.

Manager Ronnie Davies said: "I thought he boxed wel. He definitely had Thorpe hurt in that third round.

"In retrospect, the Thaxton fight (which saw John stopped in two rounds by a man in Britain's top five) was a mistake.

"It happened too soon, I admit it. But he had been looking great in the gym beforehand, holding his own with some top-ranked guys and he has been doing the same since. I'm sure he's a real prospect."
