A Crawley woman was slashed across her face and neck within seconds of answering her front door.
The 34-year-old victim was in a stable condition in hospital today following the attack shortly after 2pm yesterday.
Detectives said she answered the door at her home in Martyrs Avenue, Langley Green, Crawley, before being cut with a knife.
Her attacker, who had a tanned complexion and was wearing a baseball cap, ran off towards Briar Close as the woman clasped her wounds.
Detectives today issued an urgent appeal for information on the man, described as being about 30, wearing a short-sleeved blue T-shirt and light-coloured trousers.
Detective Sergeant Michael Beard, of Crawley CID, said: "This was an extremely vicious assault, the motive for which is unclear. I am particularly anxious that this man in caught and the weapon recovered."
