Michael Hammond helped England secure a silver medal in the European Junior Championships at Mechelen in Belgium.

The 15-year-old from Brighton won 12 of his 16 games.

Hammond won his match in the final against Scotland before the auld enemy came through 9-5. England defeated Holland in the last four.

He said: "I felt a bit nervous at the beginning because I was representing my country and didn't want to let anyone down.

"It is the biggest competition I have ever been in. But the results started to come when I relaxed."

Hammond, who plays for Sussex seniors and juniors, has his sights on the World Under-18s Cup in Australia next year.

He said: "My family couldn't come to see me in Belgium because of work commitments but hopefully, if I can make it, Australia would be a great trip for them."

Hammond, who won the Glamorgan Youth Open last year, has been successful in 2002.

The Dorothy Stringer pupil won the Eastbourne Youth Open, the 1066 Country Youth Open and the Jason Wood Memorial Trophy.

He plays for Bognor in the South East Region Super League and the Cobden Arms in the Brighton League.

Hammond is the national pairs champion, with Simon Stotart (Eastbourne).
