East Grinstead star Steve Dennis won the East Sussex CA 100-mile time trial at Upper Dicker, then announced: No more 100-mile events.

Last year's winner Dave Shepherd (Rother Valley) recorded 4hr.8min.8sec but was relegated to second place as Dennis, the last man to start, stormed home in 4hr.3min.55sec.

Third place went to local rider Simon Prior (Eastbourne Rovers) with 4hr.12min.6sec.

Andy Payne (GS Stella), who was second last year, was fourth in 4hr.12min.32sec.

The first non-Sussex rider was Redhill's Duncan Murdoch, who was fifth in 4hr.16min.23sec.

Harry Featherstone (Eastbourne Rovers) clocked 4hr.32min.7sec to finish ninth and win the veterans' handicap.

Eastbourne Rovers won the team event thanks to the efforts of Prior, Richard Gillett, who was seventh in 4hr.26min.37sec, and Steve Frame, eighth in 4hr.30min.38sec.

An exhausted looking Dennis said: "It was really hot and I went through the pain barrier. I beat my previous best time for a 100 by around seven minutes, but I suffered today and I don't intend to ride any more 100s."

By contrast, Payne said he will ride four 100-mile events on consecutive weekends in order to prepare for the Sussex 12-hour race.

Lee Povey (GS Stella) warmed up for the forthcoming Sussex sprint championship by winning the sprint event at Preston Park track ahead of clubmate John Limpus and Bob Fuller (Bikeshop).

Mark Winton (Lewes Wanderers) produced a strong sprint to win the main circuit race at Hove Park. Toby Leyton (Brighton Mitre) won the supporting senior race.

Michael Thyer (Southwater Cycles) won the Grand Veterans' mountain bike race at Robertsbridge ahead of team-mate Stuart Aspinall and John Leyland (Horsham Riders).

On Sunday the Sussex CA's open 100-mile event starts from Lavant at 6am.

The Horsham Riders have a mountain bike meeting at Northlands Woods (10.45am). Details from Gordon Smith on 01273 564660.
