On Monday, May 24, 1999, The Argus printed an article by Adam Trimingham on the subject of Bob Truelove's fight to have a campaign medal, the General Service Medal (GSM), awarded to ex-servicemen for active service in the Suez Canal Zone in Egypt 1951-55.

Mr Truelove, of Hollingdean, served with the Royal Sussex Regiment in the Canal Zone in 1949-52.

However, since 1999, the campaign has reached new momentum and the Prime Minister has asked Sir Richard Wilson (Cabinet Secretary and Chairman of the Inter-Departmental Committee on the Grant of Honours, Decorations and Medals) to investigate the matter further.

Although many Suez Canal veterans have written to their MPs on this matter, now is a good time to bombard Sir Richard with yet more demands for a GSM for those of us who were on operational duties or active service on behalf of Queen and Country in 1951-55.

Write to him at 10 Downing Street, London SW1A 2AA.
