Councillor Brian Oxley cannot be allowed to deliberately mislead readers over the process of redeveloping Portland Gate (Letters, July 12).
The Tory administration of the day in Hove rejected proposals by Labour in 1993 to compulsorily purchase and redevelop Portland Gate. In 1995, council officials declared some areas of the building unfit for human habitation, and, of course, Tony Blair visited in February that year.
Ministers from the Conservative government refused to visit the building when they were in Hove.
When Labour came to power in May 1995, we immediately enacted our proposals, which the Tories were against and continued to oppose even when the public chose the design that is now there for all to see.
An apology from Coun Oxley for his misleading comments would be appropriate but I am not holding my breath waiting.
