Keno the three-legged dog will never know how close he came to the great kennel in the sky.
The Border collie was writhing in agony after being severely injured in a road accident.
A vet, believing it was unfair to prolong the pet's pain, decided he had no option but to put him down.
Just before the lethal injection was administered, Keno saved himself by planting a slobbery kiss on the vet's hand and flashing a smile.
After that, the animal doctor did not have the heart to carry out the act and chose to amputate the damaged leg instead. Keno is now on the road to recovery and looking for a new home.
Sussex Pet Rescue carer Janet McNally said: "It was truly amazing. He was in a real mess after the accident with the bone sticking out of his leg.
"As the vet was preparing to put him down, Keno slobbered all over the vet's hand and smiled at him, even though he was in terrible pain.
"The vet just turned round and said 'I can't put him to sleep now'."
Keno's ordeal began three months ago when he escaped from his owner's home and ran into a nearby road.
After the operation, the 18-month-old collie was put in the care of Sussex Pet Rescue.
Although he has a skin condition due to stress, he should make a complete recovery.
Marcia Harris, who runs the charity, said: "Keno is looking for an exceptional family to adopt him."
Anyone interested should call Marcia on 01273 551815.
Sussex Pet Rescue was unable to give Keno's original address.
