Chris Adams could miss Sussex's trip to Warwickshire next week after being sidelined by a torn calf muscle.

The Sussex skipper is sitting out this weekend's Championship Division One clash with Somerset in Taunton.

Adams suffered the injury in the C&G Trophy defeat to Surrey at Hove and failed a fitness test shortly before the start of the Somerset game yesterday.

Tony Cottey has taken his place in the batting order while Richard Montgomerie stands in as captain.

Sussex coach Peter Moores admitted Adams' injury was a blow but he is looking for Cottey to repeat the form he has shown in the Second XI.

Adams recently admitted he was still in pain after a knee operation earlier this summer and Moores revealed that discomfort had played a part in this latest setback.

He said: "Chris was protecting the knee problem when he tore the calf muscle in the same leg.

"It happened when he went down on a ball while he was fielding.

"There was a swelling which was still there yesterday morning. He had a test but he was fit which was a bit of a shock to us.

"Obviously he will be sitting out this weekend and he is probably 50-50 for Warwickshire. We will wait and see."

The four-dayer at Edgbaston on Wednesday is followed by a National League trip to Cheltenham to take on high-flying Gloucestershire.

Moores added: "We have got James Kirtley out as well so having two senior players missing makes things more difficult.

"That's why we have got a squad. It gives Tony Cottey a great chance. He made 150 for the seconds during the week and he will be confident."

Moores felt dismissing Somerset for less than 350 in good batting conditions yesterday would have been a fine effort so he would have been pleased to see the hosts reach 270 having won the toss.
