Skaters are being asked to form one of the world's longest crocodile congas this month.

Organisers of the Skate Expectations event want more than 100 skaters to link for the challenge.

If all goes well, the skaters will glide along Hove seafront from the lagoon to the King Alfred Leisure Centre and back again.

Participants will be asked to pay £1 each towards an appeal to build a skate park at the lagoon.

There will also be a contest to see who can perform the best skating tricks and a raffle offering skating and other prizes.

Signed photos of Fatboy Slim and Zoe Ball will be raffled together with a signed CD of last year's Normstock beach party.

The event takes place next Sunday at noon.

To raise more money for the park, a showcase of young bands will take place at the King Alfred on Saturday, August 10.

Four bands will play for free from 7pm until midnight.

Grate Fireplaces, from Portslade, have agreed to be sponsors and T-shirts have been produced on behalf of the appeal, available at £10 for adults and £7 for children.

Councillor Heather James said: "Every single penny raised goes into the appeal. People on the steering group give their time and money and resources free to make the park a reality."

Preliminary plans have been produced to use the small lake at the lagoon for the skate park. These will be available at the skating event for people to see.

Coun James said: "It is important we listen carefully to all views to ensure we create a skate park that will be safe, well used and accessible to all ages and abilities.

"Once the design has been agreed and the costs assessed we will put in a National Lottery application for funding along with an application for planning permission."

Tickets for the band showcase will be available for £5 at the skating event and from Coun James on 01273 291142.
