Nick Knight broke two records at Edgbaston today but it was the Warwickshire tail-enders who gave Sussex all the problems.
Neil Carter scored a career-best 38 off just 26 balls and then last man Alan Richardson added to Sussex's frustrations by helping Knight put together a last wicket stand of 68 before Billy Taylor ended the innings on 493 when he bowled Richardson for 28 with a full-length delivery.
Knight, meanwhile, duly completed his second double century of the season and there were more landmarks to follow.
He made the highest score by a Warwickshire batsman in matches between the two counties and then the best by any batsman on either side when he reached 227, beating the 226 made by Tony Greig in Birmingham 27 years ago.
Sussex made an early breakthrough when Keith Piper was caught off the shoulder of the bat in the second over to give Jason Lewry his fourth wicket, but it proved to be a false dawn.
Carter went for his shots straight away, carving four boundaries and top-edging a six over fine leg off Lewry as he dominated a stand of 57 in seven overs.
Innes ended the fun with his first ball of the day when Carter mistimed a drive and Chris Nash held a well-judged catch at point.
Richardson is no mug with the bat either and he looked untroubled against an attack still without Robin Martin-Jenkins who is nursing a side strain.
In one over from Innes he pulled a six over square and then collected successive boundaries as 21 came off the over.
Knight, meanwhile, made serene progress. A cover driven boundary, the 24th of his innings, off Lewry took him past 200 and when the last wicket fell he was ten short of career-best 255 he made earlier in the season against Hampshire.
