Traders Against Parking Persecution (Tapp) are right to continue their protests (The Argus, July 25). That traders were originally expected to queue each morning for parking waivers struck me as an attempt by Brighton and Hove City Council to humiliate people.
That they are now expected to vacate parking bays by 4pm is in the same arrogant spirit. The council is saying to builders, decorators, carpet-layers and so on: "You start work when we give you permission and you stop when we tell you - and we have 150 people on the streets to make sure you comply."
In defence of these policies, transport councillor Simon Battle says he does not want traders' permits to become "pseudo-residents' permits". Councillor Battle represents one of the Hove wards (Vallance) where some residents have been allocated so much parking provision they cannot fill the spaces. They must be laughing all the way to the estate agents and have every reason to be grateful to New Labour.
Those who come to work in the area, the traders and the residents of the block of flats where I live have been forced out of Vallance ward streets to make this possible.
Tapp should consider inviting all those aggrieved by present parking policies in the city to join the next protest.
