Banoffee pie, the great British pudding invented by Sussex restaurateur Nigel Mackenzie, has been developed into an ice cream by Haagen Dazs.
Mr Mackenzie, who runs the Hungry Monk restaurant at Jevington, near Eastbourne, has given his blessing to the new flavour, even though he makes his own banoffee ice cream at the restaurant.
He said: "It really does taste very good. At the moment it is only available in a few outlets to test its popularity.
"Banoffee pie is such a popular pudding across the English-speaking countries the flavour has millions of potential consumers.
"In 1971 we published the recipe in a book called Secrets of the Hungry Monk, which sold 100,000 copies around the world and most people bought it for the banoffee pie recipe, so we know the pudding has its devotees."
Haagen Dazs approached Mr Mackenzie and his wife Sue to get their approval for the ice cream before going ahead with the project and asked them for comments before marketing it.
