An elderly woman was hit round the head with a heavy object by two youths as she took an afternoon stroll.

The 81-year-old was taken to Worthing Hospital for a check-up but there was no visible injury after the unprovoked attack in Buckingham Road, Shoreham, on Monday.

As she was walking home at about 3.50pm she was pestered by two young men who then hit her from behind with an unidentified object.

A man in his 40s helped the woman and shouted at the youths as they ran off.

Police, who have just released details of the attack, would like to trace the man, who had gone by the time they arrived at the scene.
