Another man has been found dead at Lewes prison in what has become a sadly regular occurrence.
This time he was a remand prisoner who was hanged using sheets in his cell.
Already there have been four suicides and six attempted suicides in the past 16 months.
An inquest will be held and there will be an internal investigation.
But they will only find out what everyone knows. This was almost certainly another suicide at an outdated and absurdly overcrowded prison.
The new governor has made all the right noises and in other respects there does seem to have been a slow but steady improvement.
But far too many young men are trying to harm themselves and a number succeed.
Everything possible must be done to stop the suicides at this jail. Staff must watch those at risk and leave nothing in their cells with which they can harm themselves.
But ultimately the prison needs to be rebuilt and the overcrowding stopped.
People are sent to prison as a punishment or to prevent them from committing offences again.
But jails should not be places which are so appalling that inmates kill themselves, as is happening with distressing regularity at Lewes.
