Plans to extend a ban on cars at a shopping precinct have been put on hold.
Brighton and Hove City Council was keen to keep cars out of George Street in Hove until 6pm, rather than the existing 4pm deadline.
It was worried about the safety of pedestrians when cars returned to the street at teatime.
The move was opposed by Hove Business Association, which said it could be bad for some shops in the street.
Chairman Keith Bryden said many shops enjoyed good business when the traffic returned at 4pm and got their deliveries done then too.
He added: "It could be good news for the restaurants but not for the shops."
Transport councillor Simon Battle said he had spoken to traders about their concerns.
He said the proposals would not now be discussed by the environment committee at its meeting in September.
He was still keen on the idea in principle but added: "We have consulted with traders and are listening to what they say."
Mr Bryden said it was best to let the pedestrianisation scheme settle down before suggesting any more changes.
He suggested the matter be looked at again once a new Tesco store opened in a couple of years, together with a new car park.
