Trialist Andy Roberts made his bow for Albion last night after his dad phoned Martin Hinshelwood urging him to give his son a chance.
The former Wimbledon and Crystal Palace player enjoyed a full 90 minutes alongside Adam Virgo at centre back in a 3-2 defeat at St Leonards.
Hinshelwood watched the match but reserves boss Dean White was in charge of the young visitors.
Roberts, 28, trained with the squad for the first time on Monday before lining up at The Firs in his first match for more than three months.
The utility player, who is available on a free transfer, said: "My dad, Chris, phoned around loads of clubs and Brighton were the only one to get back to him.
"I'm looking for a job like hundreds of other players out there and just want a chance to train and show what I can do.
"My fitness is fine but I do need some more match practice. I am grateful to Martin for giving me a chance.
"Brighton did well last season but they will find it harder this season because they haven't got the biggest squad."
Paul Rogers skippered an Albion side that twice came from behind. Peter Baker (penalty) and Dave Fisher twice gave Saints the lead only for Seagulls to level through Geoff Pitcher and Daniel Marney.
Substitute Des Boateng won the game for Saints with his first touch from close range in the 63rd minute.
