Teenage swimmers watched in horror as a man died in the sea off Brighton.
The man was swimming when he ducked under the water and did not surface.
The girl swimmers alerted a lifeguard who found the man floating face down. She brought the man to shore with the help of others.
The lifeguard tried to resuscitate the man until paramedics arrived but he was dead when he reached the Royal Sussex County Hospital.
The girls, aged 15 and 16, were swimming off the beach opposite the Brighton Centre in Kings Road at 3.30pm yesterday The man was 41 and from London. His identity was being withheld until relatives have been told.
A post-mortem examination has been scheduled for tomorrow to determine whether the man drowned or died from an illness.
