With everyone talking about hacker attacks, it's time to look at security software.

There are a number of products on the market but BlackICE PC Protection is probably the best value for money and it really works.

BlackICE is a belt and braces addition to internet security, which can help to protect passwords, identity and credit card information.

It claims to stop hackers using your PC to launch attacks against other computers. Nobody tried to do this during my tests so I was unable to validate this.

BlackICE offers an extra level of security above internet firewalls and anti-virus software.

It oversees your system and makes you aware of changes which could prove harmful while instigating blocking procedures to protect your data.

Monitoring a computer for suspicious activity is made easy with BlackIce, although a certain level of knowledge is required to set it up properly.

It's easy to set up a paranoid block of all incoming traffic which will effectively prevent you from receiving email - but at least you won't get viruses.

This product is not for everyone but could provide a valuable defence mechanism for anyone handling large quantities of email or downloading from the web.

It is excellent value for money and works with DSL, dial-up and cable modem connections.
