Komedia's World Beats season is a natural home for several Brighton-based groups.
Anapura mix East and West in equal measure and play mostly original pieces. Their tunes are often built up from low-key openings, with melodies shared between flute and sitar and deriving a lot of drive and energy from them.
At the Komedia gig, tabla was also significant, played by Yash Kummar who also shared conga duties with kit drummer and percussionist Brendan Rice.
Geoff Robb and Peter Lorenz on classical guitars provided a strong chordal backing and solos while Ian Faller's various sitars added variation and embellishment.
There were some folkier patches that brought to mind pioneering English folk-jazz quintet Pentangle. Hannah Burchell's vocal flourishes were particularly reminiscent of Jacqui McShee at times.
The presence of Lucy Hudson's flute added a jazzy element that leant towards the similar East-West crossover of US band Oregon.
The band climaxed well on Funky One, helped by Kummar's powerful sourdu side drum taking things in a Latin direction.
