Dave Shepherd's six-year reign as winner of the Sussex CA open 12-hour race has finally come to an end.

Shepherd (Rother Valley), who lives near Petworth, has not fully recovered after covering 482 miles to win the recent national 24-hour championship.

He suffered all day in the 12-hour event in West Sussex and with an hour left, decided to retire.

Southampton star Malcolm Cox (VC St Raphael) won, covering 274 miles to beat Shepherd's record of last year by a mile.

Stephen Trott (Worthing Excelsior) was just short of the previous record with 272 miles for second place and is the new Sussex title holder.

Third place in the open went to London rider Keith Coffey (Bec CC) with 268 miles. Portslade's Andy Payne (GS Stella) finished fourth with 259 miles, Peter Alderson (South-Western RC) was fifth with 254 miles.

Brighton Mitre rider Toby Leyton outsprinted his clubmate Dan Clark by a wheel to win the third category circuit race at the penultimate Hove Park meeting. Andy Cox (Lewes Wanderers) was a close third ahead of Worthing Excelsior's Chris White and Darron Perring of VC Etoile.

Hastings rider Martin Markowski (VC Bayeux) boosted his hopes of becoming overall winner of the Goodwood League by winning the 15th event at the motor circuit. Worthing's Simon McNamara (Cycleweb) finished second.

Forest Row's Sean Yates (Team Clean) won the Croydon CA ten-mile time trial in 20min.18sec.

Eastbourne rider Jon Sharples (In Gear) was second in 21min.2sec. Crawley's Angela Brown (21st Century Airports) won the women's event in 24min.40sec.

At the final evening track meeting at Preston Park, John Limpus (GS Stella) celebrated his overall victory in the senior league by winning the three-lap and eight-lap events ahead of league runner-up Mark Winton (Lewes Wanderers). Lee Povey (GS Stella), who finished third overall, was a clear winner of the sprint event.
