Hastings United boss George Wakeling has already ruled out back-to-back promotions.
United are back in the Dr Martens top-flight for the first time in three years after winning the Eastern Division title last season.
First up is a tough trip to Worcester City tomorrow and Wakeling insists consolidation is the aim.
Wakeling is good friends with Billy Smith at Crawley and is under no illusions about the size of the task he faces.
He said: "Billy warned me we won't get any easy games in this division. We'll have to scrap for every result against some very organised and talented sides.
"We have to consolidate and stay in the division. I don't think we are ready to win the league.
"It's a big jump and I haven't brought in a lot of new players."
Wakeling is without key midfielder Duncan McArthur and defender Paul Ruddy for the trip to Worcester.
McArthur pays the price for his appalling disciplinary record last season by missing the first four matches.
Ruddy has a serious groin injury and is due to see a specialist this weekend.
United have signed 18-year-old former Wimbledon striker Ellis Remy, who has scored twice in pre-season friendlies. Wakeling is also after Whitehawk attacker Ollie Rowland who has impressed in the left wing back role.
Boss Glyn White hopes St Leonards carry their excellent pre-season form into the home match with Corby in the eastern division.
Saints won four of their six friendlies this summer, including an impressive 3-2 win against Brighton.
Andy Johnson (knee) is definitely out, Matt Ball (thigh) and Steve Ferguson (calf) are both doubtful.
New striker Sean Ray is suspended for the first ten matches of the season but 17-year-old keeper Peter Newstead is set to make his league debut.
Defender Ben Austin (foot) will not be fit for Eastbourne Borough's trip to Banbury in the Dr Martens eastern division. Utility-man Paul Stevens will have a late fitness test after twisting an ankle.
