A second group of residents have dumped their rubbish in the street after they grew tired of waiting for it to be collected.

As we reported on Wednesday, people in Bolney Road, Moulsecoomb, Brighton, left their rubbish in the street. Dustcarts have since arrived to remove the mess.

Now residents in Pavilion Court, Hove, are following their example.

Dorothy Field, 64, lives in the flats on the corner of Windlesham Gardens and Goldsmid Road and had refuse piled up to her ground-floor window.

The residents complained to Brighton and Hove City Council that the rubbish was not only smelly but it was also a breeding ground for vermin and maggots.

Mrs Field said: "I have had this rubbish in front of my flat now since Tuesday. It is stinking the place out. I am an asthmatic and I need to open my windows, especially in the summer.

"I have been complaining to the council but nothing gets done. Seagulls have also got to it and everything is all over the place.

"I cannot handle it and am getting ill from it."

Neighbour Bruce Peterson and Mrs Field decided to take the matter into their own hands and dumped it into the middle of Windlesham Gardens, creating havoc for passing traffic.

Amazingly, Mr Peterson saw dustmen on the other side of the street and when he asked them to take the rubbish he said they refused.

Mr Peterson said: "It's absolutely disgusting. I saw some binmen down the road so I asked them to clear the mess.

"They said it was nothing to do with them and that I did not pay their wages, which was very rude.

"I reached the end of my tether, grabbed all the binbags and dumped them into the middle of the road."

Another neighbour, Tony Blades, said: "We have got five huge bins for the residents so I have no idea how the rubbish got to be piled high next to the flats.

"It is infested with woodlice and maggots. Mrs Field has had to disinfect all her windows."

A council spokeswoman said the rubbish was due to be collected yesterday.

She said: "We are sorry some of the area was missed and we will contact the depot immediately to make sure the rubbish is collected.

"We apologise to people who have not had their rubbish collected and thank them for their patience.

"The refuse collectors are working very hard across the city, dealing with any bins which have been missed."
