Benjamin Britten's opera set in Loxford, Suffolk, opens with the search for a May Queen.
When it is decreed no girl is virtuous enough, Albert Herring, a young male of unquestionable chastity, is elected instead.
His unimpeachable character is challenged when his drink is spiked with rum and an uninhibited Albert attempts to break free from his domineering mother.
Told in three acts, Britten and his librettist Eric Cozier poke fun at English hypocrisy with a combination of wit, mockery and tenderness.
