I was most surprised to see in the piece about the proposed 24-hour Tesco store (The Argus, August 12) that our parish council is in favour. Councillors must want their heads examined and we will remember this at next year's elections.
The site is small and cramped, practically on top of the row of cottages behind it and the car park - far from being the "main" park - is small, with several spaces taken up by the No 2 and 2A buses, whose terminus it now is. Where are Tesco customers supposed to park? Will they be willing to pay and display? Somehow I don't think so.
This would also bring yet more traffic on to the A259 and Rottingdean High Street, which will be congested enough if they manage to foist the football stadium on to Falmer. And where are the massive delivery lorries supposed to go? Round the back across other people's land? Into Golden Square, where the old historic washhouse has just been renovated at some expense?
I trust the planning committee will bear in mind the effect this store would have on other shops. We do not wish to lose the independent butcher, greengrocer, baker, off-licence or chemist, although perhaps the threat of competition would improve the Co-op's range of groceries.
