Sophie Johnstone has been selected for the World Junior Championships in South Korea.

The 17-year-old was chosen in the under-48kg after a British training camp in Alicante, Spain.

She said: "It's brilliant news, very pleasing."

Sophie revealed how the Commonwealth Games fired her up to clinch the spot.

"I was chosen as a reserve for the Commonwealth Games and acted as a training partner for Clare Lynch who got a silver medal in Manchester.

"Although it was frustrating not to compete myself it acted as a great inspiration. I saw my friends, like Clare, winning medals and it made me even more determined to make sure I got into the World Juniors.

"I think my consistent form this year got me selected as well as some good performances in Alicante where I got a bronze medal in a specially arranged competition."

Sophie will fly out to the Far East on September 8.

"It will be the 12th country I've visited through my judo this year," she added.

Sophie has also been selected for the British team in the World Senior Team Championships in Switzerland on September 1.

She said: "I'll be the only junior and it will be an honour being in the same team as the likes of Kate Howey.

"I helped us win a silver in the European Championships so hopefully we can go even better at the worlds.

"But, for me, the World Juniors are more important because I am a junior and it will be my last chance.

"I was too young when they took place two years ago and in two years time I will be too old. I aim to grab the opportunity."

Sophie competes in Hungary this weekend and has been training at the British Academy at Bisham Abbey.

She added: "I've been training with my friend Lizzy Welsh, who is based there. I will be going to Bisham full-time next term."

Sophie, a former national junior champion, left King's Manor (Shoreham) after taking her A levels this summer.
