Two teenagers were attacked after they and their friends were confronted by a gang of older youths in Lancing.
The youngsters were on their way home in West Way when they were approached.
There was a brief conversation before two members of the older group hit two of the teenagers.
The teenagers were then chased to a friend's house.
Details of the attack, which happened at about 1.30am on Sunday, were released by police today.
One of the attackers was a white male, about 5ft 11in, aged 18 to 20 and thin with short blond hair. He wore a white T-shirt and jeans.
Another was white, aged 20 to 22, 5ft 10in with short dark hair and a fine moustache. He wore a dark sweat top and light jeans.
