An organist who has performed in a seaside town for 21 years was given a surprise thank-you on stage.
John Mann gasped when his show was interrupted as Mayor and Mayoress Eric and Liz Mardell announced the anniversary to hundreds of fans at the Pavilion Theatre, Worthing, yesterday.
He has been bringing his Seaside Melodies show to the venue every Wednesday since 1981.
Mr Mardell said to the packed hall: "We would all like to say thank you very much from everyone, including Worthing theatres and the fans."
As a cake was wheeled on, Mr Mann gasped with astonishment and the audience applauded.
Brighton-based Mr Mann, a BBC Radio organist, told his fans he was in a bit of a flush.
After the show he said: "It was all a complete surprise. I feel very honoured to have the occasion recognised.
"I am just glad someone had the sense to let me keep playing here."
